 There is now a quick fix to the symptom of this problem. The code now
 defaults to ascii  encoding if the unicode-str conversions fails. I'm not
 sure this is enough to fix the underlying problem. I don't have a windows
 machine with a ssh server and python available to test this so any reports
 on the success/failure of this fix is appreciated.
